How many times can I take TOPIK?

Unlimited. There's no cap on the number of times you can sit the exam. Most test-takers retake TOPIK 2–3 times to reach their target level. Each attempt gives you experience with the test format, timing, and question types — which is itself a significant advantage. Many students score 1–2 levels higher on their second attempt simply because they know what to expect.

Is TOPIK required for Korean universities?

Most Korean universities require TOPIK Level 3 or higher for undergraduate admission and Level 4 or higher for graduate programs. Top-tier universities like Seoul National University, Yonsei, and Korea University often expect Level 5 or above for competitive programs. However, some universities offer conditional admission — you can enroll in the university's Korean language program first and gain admission to degree programs once you reach the required TOPIK level.

What's the difference between TOPIK I and TOPIK II?

TOPIK I tests only listening and reading (Levels 1–2) and is designed for beginners. TOPIK II adds a writing section with four questions — two practical writing tasks and two essays — and covers Levels 3–6. TOPIK I is 100 minutes; TOPIK II is 180 minutes. Most students start with TOPIK I after 3–6 months of study and move to TOPIK II once they reach intermediate level.

How long are TOPIK scores valid?

TOPIK scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. This matters for university applications — make sure your scores won't expire before your intended enrollment date. If you take TOPIK in April 2026, your scores are valid through April 2028. Plan your test dates accordingly, especially if you're applying for scholarships that have separate deadlines.

Can I take TOPIK outside of Korea?

Yes. TOPIK is administered in over 80 countries at designated testing centers. The exam content is identical worldwide. Check the official TOPIK website (topik.go.kr) for a complete list of international testing locations and registration procedures. In the United States, testing centers are available in major cities including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Honolulu. In Latin America, centers operate in São Paulo, Mexico City, and Buenos Aires, among others.

TOPIK measures Korean proficiency for non-native speakers and overseas Koreans. Scores may be used for university admission or graduation, employment, some immigration processes, and Global Korea Scholarship applications. The receiving university, employer, scholarship body, or immigration authority decides what score it accepts.

Choose the correct test

TOPIK I covers Levels 1 and 2 and tests listening and reading.
TOPIK II covers Levels 3 through 6 and tests listening, writing, and reading.
TOPIK also offers paper-based, internet-based, and speaking assessments. Format, dates, and availability vary by location.

According to Study in Korea, TOPIK score reports are valid for two years from the score-announcement date. Always check the official TOPIK site and your local test center before registering.

For the standard paper-based test:

Listening: 30 questions, 40 minutes

Writing: 4 tasks, 50 minutes

Internet-based testing can use different administration details, so do not copy the paper-based timetable into an IBT plan without checking the current notice.

What level do you need?

There is no universal requirement for every Korean university or job. Study in Korea says regular Korean-taught degree programs commonly use Level 3 or higher for admission and Level 4 or higher for graduation, while departments and special categories may set different standards. English-taught programs may use English-language evidence instead.

GKS rules also change by cycle. A TOPIK score can strengthen an application or affect language-training requirements, but applicants must follow the current GKS notice rather than assuming one fixed score is mandatory for every track.

A realistic preparation method

Preparation time depends on your starting level, first language, study hours, instruction quality, and experience with exam tasks. Treat any month estimate as a planning example, not a promise.

Step 1: Take an official sample

Use an official past paper or the TOPIK online practice environment. Record separate results for listening, reading, and—if taking TOPIK II—writing.

Step 2: Build a weekly plan

A balanced week might include:

vocabulary and grammar review on most days
two focused listening sessions
two timed reading sessions
one or two writing sessions for TOPIK II
one timed section or full practice test
an error log that explains why each answer was wrong

Step 3: Train the format

TOPIK rewards Korean ability plus time management. Practice transferring answers, following instructions, and moving on from questions that consume too much time. For TOPIK II writing, compare your work with the official task guidance and scoring examples.

Step 4: Review by weakness

Do not spend equal time on everything. If reading speed is the problem, use short timed passages. If listening errors come from vocabulary, review transcripts. If writing scores are low, work on task completion, organization, register, grammar, and spacing.
